Giving away account: Legality?

I'd never give a toon away. I might give away TCs and equip and call it quits, but give my identity away? Never. No one would want to be me anyways

Maybe I'm anal. Maybe I'd like to take over someone else's toon . Maybe I just like consistency. I just think it's bad business to say one thing and do another.

Maybe I can simplify my thoughts by telling you what I think the rule should be. Which is just my opinion, but it's a consistent, realistic expectation that can be given to players and not be questioned, nor prone to confusion.

Account Sharing is defined in three ways:
1. Multiple people playing the same account on a regular basis.
2. Player A asks Player B to log on as Player A to perform some singular task.
3. Player A is quitting, and gives their account to Player B. Only Player B from this point on will log into the game as Player A.

#1 is illegal. Don't do it. You will be banned if discovered. (PooPoo)
#2 is not illegal. But don't do it. You will be lucky if you are not compromised by Player B. (Neo/Sonera)
#3 is legal in most cases. If foul play is discovered or malicious intent, then the Company reserves the right to terminate the account in question at any time. (Driiveby & others)



To be perfectly honest, the above is how I think Glitchless actually handles it now, or close enough. But it's not clear. It's more of a 'on the whim'. And company and profits aside, I find Game Admins who do things on a whim distasteful. #3 is really the one area I would like to have cleared up. Sonera was dumb for trusting Neo. She paid for it. PooPoo was taking shots at the Business, and he/they paid for it. I'd have banned Poo too for that. But #3? The idea that you are given an account, you spend time on it, effort on it, time goes by and things seem ok. And then -one day-, on a whim, you're banned...that doesn't feel right. So set it all straight now, and it's clear moving forward. You can even 'grandfather' Driiveby, Trojan, and whoever else in now, and say from this point forward, no more. Or do like #3 above. Just make it clear!

Does that make sense? It's not that I don't understand the rules, or whatever people think. I'm not sharing accounts either. (Although, Rich, ya know, if you're leaving...). Seriously though, in Driive's shoes, I'd want to really know before I invested more time/money into the character.

I used Driiveby (Zazie) as my example in this post. Sorry, Iceblood. I really hardly know Trojan other than what the gossips have to say on chat. I know Driiveby though a little better, and I find him to be an honourable guy. If people want to play his pick the # game, that's ok. I've bought stuff off him before though for N alts and he's always given the item after receiving my gold. So if anything, I have a deep respect for Driive. I also think he's a good PKer, and I applaud him for doing that over and over But at any rate, no favoritism nor suspicious motives. Just...clarity.

I think that nobody should give away players, even if it's ok with both parties. For someone trying to get a high level character essentially for free, is not fair. Let them work for it. And as far as punishment goes. I agree that consistency is major in keeping the peace, otherwise you are going to end up with a bunch of angry people....and more problems...

As I have stated before, I don't really know Trojan. Certainly not on a personal level. I don't give a crap if Sonera is a he/she. I generally refer to people with their ingame gender because 99% of them are guys irl anyways.

I find it extremely interesting people would rather this be brushed under the carpet. I think that speaks volumes. Why is it so hard for a simple clarification? I mean, really, all Glitchless needs to do is say everyone is banned, or you only get banned if you post it in forums, or you never get banned for that alone, or some such. And yet....so much resistance. Interesting.

Ericb, you have a good point. Personally, I don't agree with it, but it's a good point. I don't agree because the toon had to be worked by someone to get to that level, and if that someone wants to give their work to someone else, I think that's fine. I tend to dislike it more because of the personality change. You get to know someone, you're friends, then they give it away and you have to separate yourself...that would bug me more. But this isn't about what you or I think. Just what Glitchless's intentions are.

I am actually interested in what Malc is saying. Glitch said that account sharing is illegal, yet often no action is taken against account sharers.

Would be nice to have that cleared up.
