Swordmage/Spearmage/Hammermage
Ok, other than Swordmage, IMO, the skill names could probably use some work, but here's the idea:
High level skill that would confer partial (so as not to totally negate the Staves skill) staff bonuses when wielding the appropriate weapon. Maybe 50 or 75% of the bonuses of using a staff when the skill is at level 100.
Basically be a decent mage while still using a sword or (insert other weapon here).
Now, keep in mind, please, that I've been playing for about two days, so I really have no idea how unbalancing this might or might not be. But thanks for reading.

Edit: After giving it some further thought, the bonus should probably be much smaller than 50 or 75%, maybe 15 or 25%.

Reason: further thought on the topic

the problem with this idea, is the skills that need a staff in order to be in effect. IE mental conservation, sleight of hand, divination, etc.

Granted, but then that'd make the suggested skills even less potentially overpowered and a better candidate for inclusion, assuming the creator thought they were a good idea in the first place.
I suppose it'd simply break down to anyone who trained one of these skills using less energy to cast while wielding their favored weapon type. And if they used gems that primarily used mana, then it wouldn't be worth training at all. OR they could be coded to make any weapon act like a Staff X .3845 (or what have you) for bonus purposes from others skills such as Sleight of Hand, etc.

One great thing about this game that a staff is not required to cast spells. Granted, it makes things easier, but an enchanter can easily use a bow or a staff. (My alt is an enchanter specialising with bows for example).
Altenatively, a rogue/weaponmaster/vampire also could use a staff and cast spells almost as good as a caster - and could probably do better than a normal mage in most respects. It all comes down to how you want to level.
The great thing about this game is that you could play one class over 4 different ways with non-spell damage (pierce,slash,crush,staves,2h weapons, dual wield), and over 4 different ways in terms of magic (DD,DoT,heals/prevention shields, auras), and also level it different ways as well. The problem is finding a class that matches the way you want to play and level.

A new skill could be introduced that would make the above skills to work with the specified weapon types... piercing, slashing, and/or crushing. Each type would need to be a different skill (Level 20, at least) There would of course need to be some sort of balancing issue to keep the wizard/War-Mage balanced...
Even though i would love to dual wield Zombie Scale Claws and still gain the benefits of the staff skills i do not think this would be a good idea...
