This has always been the case, besides when dust prices went up.
why change it now?!?!
does this mean you will change others as well to work the same way??

When dusts were 15-20k, you could make 5-10k off the gem. In the long run, not a big boost for a good bit of time. I can't speak for before those dust prices, but that's as low as they went back to mid '09, and during that time, you could sell to people for more than store sell, so, it was worth it(to me) to be patient.
When this patch came out...I was making derini tps for ~200-250g. mats would have been resins+ another 200-250g more or less. so a 40k+ profit PER gem. Make 10, and that's 400k, make 20, and that's basically a free TC...minus a little downtime. To some, farming would be more beneficial, to others, this was bank...or would have been.
Even now, shopping around, still profitable(I think) but it's back to the 5-10k range atm, and will probably fluctuate a bit more now that the 1x-2x ratios from downtiering has been reduced...will have to let the market settle over a few days to be sure.

I agree with Smash here. Someone (and I have no idea who, I'd gone to bed by then) has seen this being done, and fancied a whine.
It's always been exploitable. I used to make a bit of gold off crafting deriniums and selling to store, or selling to clannies @120k (or a bit less when really cheap dusts were available). Yes, the amount of gold you can make has increased now, but if you're downtiering, you've now got to have a massive amount of patience and storage - I took 90 t12 dusts and a few mid-teens geodes and oils, and ended up with 2 full rows of storage for crafting deriniums. Also, it still takes a lot of time. And if you're not farming, then you're not raising gold by that method.
Regarding the downtiering chance for an increase in higher tiers, I'll have to agree, the numbers being created were insane. From a t30 dust, I ended up with 2558 t12 dusts. Even with the nerf, that'll be enough to keep me crafting for quite a while
