So...Gem shatter is a very exclusive "skill".. or game interfacing technique (whatever u wanna call it)....there are many, many, many In-play gems you cannot shatter...
At first, you were allowed to shatter enemy gems, any gem without any restrictions besides the speed of cooldown and repeated shatters (based on skill level). This is a falsity. Let us just consider the gem field. The visible enemy gem field only shows 6 of the 7 enemy gems that are playable/being played at the moment. The "gem slot" gem is invisible. This still neutral yet playable gem should indeed be viewable to the opposing team, AND shatterable. This is shown by #2 in the screenie.
Secondly, we were able to shatter our own gems, ANY gem; with a simple right-click, our targeted gem in the game is supposed to shatter, yet, just like the previous "#2", our own "gem slot" gem, shown this time by #1, is not shatterable; the only way to get rid of this gem, and potentially speed up gem draws, is to place in the gem field, THEN shatter. This could have very negative consequences, say....you're a BM....low on life, 1 vs 1 on a caster who just apoc'd; 1st gem that comes up is rabid.... do u want to lose your most valuable heals at this moment?... probably not... yet the only way to rush towards the next available choice is to play the gem and have the effects run for a few precious seconds. This #1 NEEDS to be shatterable.
#3 as demonstrated by the screenie are friendly gems.... maybe theyre afk... maybe theyre busy clicking elsewhere (after all, split-seconds can make or break), or maybe you just know better; but after all, you SHOULD be able to shatter friendly gems in field of play...
- There might be 1 concern thou: "i was only trying to target them...not shatter that gem..." Well, you could have it be a right-click into a 1 option menu "shatter xyxyxxy gem", left click option to shatter, or click outside option to close menu. Yes, it takes an extra step, but to assure precision of intention into play, that extra split-second would be worth it....
By the way, I numbered these SHOULD-SHATTERABLE gem slots #1-#3 in hierarchy of importance to add to the game. #1 being a most-imminent needed patch to fix, #3 being a "yes, if all the stars and planets were aligned perfectly, this feature would exist". IMO
